The origin of Avocado has been traced to central Mexico, it was considered as a “sacred item” by the Aztecs, who offered it to the gods in ceremonial rituals. It then became an exotic food consumed mostly in the Americas until our time, where it has become a product which daily consumption is recommended.
Avocado is regarded as a “superfood”. This “sacred item” is not only nutritious but also has nutraceutical ingredients that enhance health such as vitamin E, glutathione and b-sitosterol, which help to neutralize free radicals that may damage the heart and contribute to the development of some types of cancer. It is also related to the inhibition of cancerous tumors.[1]
In addition to being a superfood, avocado is used to produce oil, soap, cosmetics, shampoo and several other products.
Because of all these qualities and uses, the global consumption of avocado has been steadily increasing and has led merchants around the world to seek this product in international markets. The biggest producer and exporter is Mexico with more than 22% of the world exports.
Quality of the Mexican avocado has increased over the past years as a result of the entry into force of the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and the United States of America. The quality and phytosanitary standards set forth by the treaty were further strengthened by Mexican legislation, which compelled producers to raise their quality and phytosanitary standards.
